The S55 uses a vacuum pump to generate vacuum for the brake booster. A lack of brake pressure or higher braking effort may intake a failure of the vacuum pump. It's located on the driver's side of the engine block and driven by the timing chain via a sprocket.  

This pump also serves as a drive for the HPFP (High Pressure Fuel Pump).  The HPFP mounts to the top of the vacuum pump, and is driven by a small camshaft inside the vacuum pump.

This is a Genuine BMW S55 vacuum pump with a two year warranty.
